SUCCESS FACTORS FOR PEER TEAMS

1. Competency to achieve the goal(s)

bulletTechnical skills includes the abilities to:
bulletIdentify what skill and/or knowledge is required.
bulletRecognize and fill critical gaps.
bulletCollaborative skills (See Creative Interchange Series)

2. Commitment to a shared vision
bulletThe shared vision balances individual aspiration with the group goal(s).
bulletVision alignment is evident by team members contributing their time, expertise, and talents in service of the vision. Contributing includes:
bulletTeam members volunteering for roles assignments and tasks.
bulletTeam members providing assistance to teammates whenever possible.
bulletEven in the face of frustration, ambiguity and adversity, the team is tenacious--doesn't give up.

3. Organizing structure is appropriate to needs
bulletAbility to identify structural needs based on the task(s) to be accomplished and the unique individuals involved.
bulletIssues of roles and decision-making are openly addressed.
bulletRoles, and the nature of the relationships associates with those roles, are defined.
bulletDecisions are made at the appropriate level (e.g., collective, expert, "leader", etc.)
bulletTeam maintains flexibility to modify structure, as needed.

4. A "work" process to achieve the shared vision
bulletGroup ground rules are articulated, enacted, and reinforced. If needed, corrective action is taken.
bulletTeam maintains an open environment (e.g., ability to discuss "undiscussables").
bulletA common language is used. Definitions of unfamiliar terms or phrases are explained.
bulletA shared understanding of the current and ongoing situation (requirements and expectations) is created and maintained.
bulletAgreements related to approaches, methods, and tools are reached and implemented.
bulletEffective use of resources (inside and outside the team) is achieved.
bulletEffective time management is achieved through short-term and long-term planning.
bulletTeam members hold themselves accountable for achieving established milestones.
bulletTeam members demonstrate process awareness by taking responsibility to stop/disrupt situations or behaviors that impede progress toward achieving the shared vision...without eliminating valuable dissent. Members also demonstrate process awareness by pausing to ask what is being learned.
bulletGroup energy is maintained through combinations of peak work periods, breaks, and non-task-related activities, etc.
bulletThe process encourages contribution and embodies respect for individuals--and the team.
bulletThe team celebrates success (big and small).
